On the night of 31st January 1953 hundreds of people lost their lives and thousands were made homeless in what is remembered as the worst peacetime disaster to strike the east coast of Britain.

A unique combination of a tidal surge and a deep atmospheric low pressure system raised sea levels in Scotland. Gale force winds whipped up and increased the height of the tide resulting in a massive wall of water rushing relentlessly south, down the North Sea. The further down the country this unusually high tide travelled, the more it built into a massive tsunami-like wave, towering 3 metres higher than the expected spring tide. When this wave reached the mouth of the Thames estuary, Essex took the full force of the violent surge.

There were 300 breaches in the sea walls, some just a few metres, others half a mile in length.

Flood 53 tells the stories of just a few of those people who lived through these terrible times. These are their stories, told in their own words, with archive film, photos and contemporary newspaper reports.
